Tattoos have a long history in Hawai`i. They can be e.g. connected to tribal affiliation, protection from evil spirits, social status or rites of passage. The first people on the islands came frome Polynesia with boats, a passage more than 4200 km. The ocean has a tremendous significance in both regions, and you find a lot of wave-patterns in both Polynesia and Hawai`i.

I love the ocean, and especially the warm, welcoming waters of Maui, with its sublime honus (sea turtles), dolphins, monk seals and colorful species of fish in the beautiful reefs – and certainly the smaller and the huge waves (the latter eyes only). https://www.surfrider.org/
